Caring for Cats

Some tips on caring for your cat.

It is important to understand the behaviour of cats and to prevent their becoming a nuisance to other people and destroying wildlife.

To prevent your cat becoming a nuisance:

  • confine the cat indoors - day and night
  • have the cat desexed
  • have the cat microchipped and registered with Council.

If you know of an abandoned cat in your neighbourhood, contact Council or an animal welfare agency. Simply chasing a cat away does not solve the problem.

Your CAT and WILDLIFE

It is important that your cat does not destroy wildlife and damage the natural environment:

  • pets are not allowed in wildlife protection areas—all national parks and many bushland areas, including some parks and reserves, are designated as wildlife protection areas
  • make certain your cat does not enter a national park, a wildlife reserve or other habitat known to home to an endangered species or other wildlife.

Many kinds of native wildlife are more active or more vulnerable to hunting at night. There is also evidence that cats hunt more during the night than during the day. Keeping a cat inside can help reduce the number of native animals killed.

Protect your cat and the wildlife.
