Caring for Dogs

Some tips in caring for your dog

Owning a dog can be a great experience but it also comes with some responsibility.

Your dog, your responsibilities

Under the Companion Animal Act 1998 you must ensure:

  • Your dog does not attack or cause injury to persons, animals or property.
  • Your dog is fenced in on your property.
  • When the dog is taken for a walk or exercised, it must be on a chain, cord or leash and under control.
  • Your dog must not enter public swimming areas, school grounds, shops, shopping arcades or similar public places unless it is a public space specifically set aside by Council in which dogs are allowed.
  • Your dog must be identified (microchipped) from 12 weeks of age and life time registered from the time the dog is six months old.
  • If your dog defecates on the footpath or on any other public place, you must clean it up.

Off-leash areas

Dogs are allowed on a leash in some areas as long as they are under the effective control of a competent person.

Obedience training

Responsible dog owners should consider behavioural training for their dogs.

The socialisation of dogs and behavioural training makes dog ownership more enjoyable and reduces conflict with other members of the public.
