Voluntary Contribution to Climate Change Fund

This unique initiative is designed to allow residents greater involvement in assisting the Manly community to mitigate against and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The reality of climate change is now widely agreed within the scientific community and international, national and local action on the issue is essential to drive the change needed to protect our local community and environments against the likely impacts.

Why?

For a coastal community like Manly the need to act now is even greater. We can already see that the impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events, would significantly impact on our local community, environments and lifestyles.

Furthermore, the cost of inaction on climate change will be much greater than the cost of taking action now. In response to these challenges Manly Council has developed a number of measures to address the impacts of climate change and to reduce our community’s contribution to the problem.

These include, for example:

  • Reducing Manly Council’s carbon footprint by 2010.
  • Working with the community to help reduce their carbon emissions.
  • Reducing energy consumption for street lighting.
  • Use of renewable energies, such as solar power, for community facilities.
  • Seawall protection and strengthening.
  • Stormwater harvesting.
  • Flood protection of low lying areas.
  • There are many recommendations that our community needs to consider, some simple, some very costly. The full financial impact cannot be met within the normal budget of Council.

How can I assist?

A financial contribution can be made to a special ‘climate change fund’ that will be used to fund Council projects that will assist Manly to reduce its contribution to climate change and to assist the community to prepare for the likely impacts. This voluntary contribution can be made when paying Council rates.

How will Council use the funds?

Funds from this voluntary contribution will be used to accelerate Council’s response to climate change mitigation and adaptation and is not a substitute for existing Council funded programs.

The top priority that has been identified for funding from the voluntary contribution is to see Council using 100% green energy for street lights and community facilities and buildings, which will offset our greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum. Council also plans to progressively retrofit community buildings with the most efficient lighting technology available to further reduce our energy consumption.
